Professor William Cleveland of Purdue University wrote a very insightful book in 1994 called "The Elements of Graphing." In that book he said,

To regularly miss surprises by failing to probe thoroughly with visualization tools is terribly inefficient because the cost of obtaining intensive data analysis is typically very small compared with the cost of data collection."
