Business Intelligence & Data Visualization

Business Intelligence Systems are highly dependent on effective visualization of data.

Unfortunately, many companies spend a lot of money on the back end without pondering the most important "last mile" of exactly how the end user needs to interact with this data.

Professor William Cleveland of Purdue University wrote a very insightful book in 1994 called "The Elements of Graphing." In that book he said,

"Contained within the data of any investigation is information that can yield conclusions to questions not even originally asked. That is, there can be surprises in the data. To regularly miss surprises by failing to probe thoroughly with visualization tools is terribly inefficient because the cost of obtaining intensive data analysis is typically very small compared with the cost of data collection."

Professor Cleveland got it right. Providing the tools that allow rapid, ad hoc visualization of your data is one of the most often neglected aspects of business information systems.
